Meritor to join Big Three automakers in Web-based exchange

TROY, Mich. (May 22, 2000) — Truck and auto parts supplier Meritor Automotive plans to join an Internet-based network being developed by General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Renault V.I., and Nissan Motors Co.

The system, called Covisint, would enable exchange-style transactions of products and services as well as improved communication on product development among component suppliers and auto makers. Commerce One and Oracle are the two primary technology providers to the planned venture.

Meritor chairman and CEO Larry D. Yost, said the company’s participation “underscores our commitment to take the lead in e-business initiatives.” Last month, Meritor abandoned an investment in a business-to-business truck-parts exchange called Fleetworks.com amid concerns about whether its equity position would bias the “open market” concept of the site.
