Mexico, U.S. lay groundwork for border opening
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 9, 2001) — Mexican trucks will be able to haul international freight throughout the United States by the beginning of next year, according to a Mach 22 agreement between U.S. and Mexican transport and trade officials.
Mexican companies would be required to comply with U.S. safety and operating standards for commercial trucking, and will have to obtain insurance through a company licensed in the U.S., reports truckinginfo.com, a web site maintained by U.S.-based Heavy Duty Trucking magazine.
Around 190 Mexican trucking companies have longstanding applications for authority in the U.S. It is not yet clear whether they will have to reapply under the new regulatory scheme.
