Michigan ponders cell phone ban
LANSING, Mich. — Canadian truck drivers crossing the Ambassador or Blue Water Bridge may soon have to turn off their cell phones when they get to the other side.
According to the Detroit News, a House bill introduced this week by Rep. Gino Polidori, (D-Dearborn) would ban motorists from making or answering phone calls and text messaging with hand-held cell phones while driving in Michigan.
The legislation would make it a secondary offense to use a cell phone while driving, meaning that a driver could only be issued such a ticket if pulled over for other infractions like speeding.
A cell phone ticket would carry a $100 fine. It would not add demerit points to the driver’s record.
The use of hands-free devices would be exempt.
The cell phone bill has been sent to the House Transportation Committee.
