More than a million work hours lost following Sept. 11 attacks

OTTAWA (Oct. 29, 2001) — More than a million Canadian work hours were lost in the week following the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.

Statistics Canada reported 156,000 Canadians took part of the week off, nearly three times the average number. The agency reported 1.4 million work hours were lost.

Two-thirds of the extra time off work happened in Ontario. Ontario has 40% of the nation’s work force.

On average, 53,000 workers take off 559,000 hours per week.
