More winter shipping flexibility allowed for Oceanex sailings

MONTREAL — The Laurentian Pilotage Authority has approved changes to winter night pilotage regulations for Oceanex on the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City.

According to the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, until now, and including the winter of 2006-2007, there was no night navigation allowed. This means that ships loaded in Montreal the night before could not leave port until daybreak the next day — causing inconsistencies in the schedule for Oceanex during the winter period of January through March.

The navigation restrictions forced some carriers to revert to road transport for shipments to Newfoundland during the winter.

The changes will allow Oceanex to maintain a consistent schedule for Montreal to Newfoundland 52 weeks per year on their Monday and Thursday service.
