MTO changes licence ID requirements
TORONTO — The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is strengthening the security of Ontario driver’s licences by limiting the types of personal identity documents that can be used to apply for a licence.
The new requirements — a response to Ontario’s 2005 Auditor General report — have been developed with other provincial and state governments to ensure the identity of individuals applying for a driver’s licence, the government says.
As of January 23, 2006, personal identification documents must be valid when presented before getting a driver’s licence. Some of the acceptable identification documents include:
Passport; Canadian Citizenship Card with photo; immigration documents; Birth Certificate (Canadian and US); Ontario Health Card; Marriage Certificate, among others.
No longer being accepted are: Baptismal Certificate with additional ID; Certified Copy of Birth; Age of Majority Card; Credit Card; Debit Card; Employee Card; Vehicle Permit; Senior Citizen ID Card; Armed Service ID with photo, among others.
A full list of acceptable documents is available on the ministry’s website and at DriveTest Centres.
