Mullen Group gets Smooked
OKOTOKS, Alta. — Flatbed and oil services giant, the Mullen Group has entered into a letter of intent to acquire Smook Bros. Contracters, a privately owned company in Thompson, Man.
Smook is a multi-disciplined heavy civil construction company with about a dozen semi trucks, a handful of service trucks and several pieces of heavy construction equipment and crushers.
The company provides services in infrastructure construction, mine site work and tailings ponds construction to the energy, natural resources and government sectors.
Smook is run by brothers Ted and Chris Smook, who, with their father Nick Sr., bought out their uncles and founders of the company Peter, Jerry, Bill, and Steve.
Smook will be aligned with Mullen’s largest subsidiary, Kleysen Group in Winnipeg to expand Mullen’s presence and service offerings in the burgeoning Manitoba market.
Manitoba in the burgeoning energy services sector
"Northern Manitoba is a growing market and Thompson is the ‘Hub of the North,’" says Jeff Kleysen, President of Kleysen, who adds that the region is seeing a boom in hydro-electricity projects and natural resources and infrastructure development.
He says that the deal makes sense since Kleysen and Smook service many of the same customers.
Adds Murray Mullen, chairman and CEO of the Mullen Group: "Smook represents a new growth platform for our organization and expands upon our service offerings to the energy and natural resource sectors.
"We have an excellent team at Kleysen that understands the landscape and markets in northern Manitoba and we will rely upon their management team to provide support to Smook and capitalize on new opportunities."
