WASHINGTON — Surface trade among the U.S., Canada and Mexico rose to the highest monthly level on record this past March.

According to the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, March trade among the three NAFTA nations rose 14.8 percent from a year before.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline, although 90 percent of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.

March U.S. imports by truck rose 12.7 percent from a year earlier to $24.6 billion, while truck exports gained 16.2 percent to $23.6 billion.

Rail imports rose 14 percent to $8.1 billion year-over-year, while exports gained 10.8 percent to $3.6 billion.

Pipeline imports jumped 23.3 percent to $4.4 billion while exports rose 2.6 percent to $368 million.
