Navistar International, Siemens AG in joint engine venture
CHICAGO (March 30) — Navistar International Corp. and Siemens AG’s announced a joint venture to develop and manufacture diesel fuel injectors with digital valve technology, which could help Navistar engines meet stricter emissions rules.
Siemens Automotive Corp. will own 51% of the U.S. -based joint venture, which will operate as Siemens Diesel Systems Technology LLC, the companies said in a joint news release.
The initial investment by the companies totals $100 million US.
The joint venture will concentrate on developing electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated low-pressure injectors for use in diesel fuel systems made by Navistar’s Engine & Foundry Division. The injector will use proprietary Sturman digital valve technology under license from Sturman Engine Systems LLC.
The fuel injection system is scheduled to be ready for commercial use by the 2002 model year, when tougher U.S. emissions regulations will take effect. The companies hope to produce four million injectors per year by 2005 or sooner.
