NB to improve farm equipment moving guidelines

FREDERICTON — New Brunswick is developing voluntary guidelines on transport companies to ensure safer movement of agricultural machinery on provincial highways, Transportation Minister Denis Landry announced this week.

“The Department of Transportation was asked by the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick to consult with farmers to develop improved guidelines for the safe movement of their agricultural machinery,” Landry said.

Consultations with the department by the University of New Brunswick Transportation Group, provided recommendations for improving lighting and signage for agricultural machinery.

“The agricultural industry and highway users in general will benefit from improved safety as a result of following these standard lighting and marking guidelines,” Landry said.

Once the guidelines are available in the spring of 2008, voluntary compliance is expected to be achieved within two years on new equipment and five years on used equipment.
