New Atlantic cargo ferry service to begin in April

CORNER BROOK, Nfld. (Nov. 12, 2002) — The Belledune Port Authority has confirmed that a cargo ferry link between Belledune, N.B., and Corner Brook will begin in April, according to a report in today’s Moncton Times & Transcript.

Tanker operator Rigel Shipping Canada will operate the freight ferry service. The Port plans to route Newfoundland-bound truck freight through northeastern New Brunswick rather than Sydney, N.S. The move would save hours of transit time.

Rigel, based in Shediac Cape, N.B., is best known as a petroleum tanker operator. Its ferry will carry up to 150 truck trailers on each of three weekly trips. Each crossing takes about 23 hours.
