New Brunswick flood alert

FREDERICTON — The first thing you heard about on CBC this morning was that the St. John River in New Brunswick has flooded its banks, and the first thing that you thought about was that truck you have coming in from Dartmouth.

So far, there’s no need to fret. Yet.

While major traffic disruptions due to the serious flooding have not been reported, the dispatcher at one Fredericton-based carrier told Todaystrucking.com that a few highway on-ramps were slower than usual — the New Brunswick Ministry of Transportation is posting road closures as they occur and then get opened again.

In addition to the closures, the Ministry warns that all drivers should be cautious.

“Motorists are reminded to exercise extreme caution in flooded areas, as debris and water remains on the road in places. Motorists should also be on the alert for wildlife traveling on or near roadways.”

Sgt. Derek Strong of the N.B. detachment of the RCMP says there have been no major disruptions but he warns that they’re anticipating serious flooding Saturday south of Fredericton, on Highway 2, new Jemseg Meadows.

“We’re ready for it. We’ll have ample signage and emergency plans in place,” he said.
