New Brunswick to enforce spring thaw restrictions March 2
FREDERICTON (Feb. 5, 2003) — Spring weight restrictions on New Brunswick highways will begin March 2, the province’s Dept. of Transportation announced yesterday.
The restrictions will begin March 2 at midnight in southern New Brunswick and March 9 at midnight in northern New Brunswick. The dates are dependent upon weather conditions and are therefore subject to change.
A notice with details about affected highways will appear in newspapers and on the web at www.gnb.ca/index-e.asp, keyword: Transportation.
Weight restrictions are imposed each year during the spring thaw period to protect the highway system. Traditionally, the removal of spring weight restrictions begins in mid-May; however, the final date is dependent upon weather conditions.
Should weather conditions warrant, district engineers are authorized to close roads to trucks or to impose weight restrictions on highways or portions of highways at any time in order to protect the highway system.
