New England ditches biodiesel mandate

BOSTON — The state of Massachusetts has suspended a planned biodiesel mandate that would have required a minimum 2 percent biodiesel content in fuel.

The Clean Energy Biofuels Act, scheduled to take effect last week, will now be a voluntary program.

The mandate was scrapped because officials felt it would place "unreasonable" costs on consumers and small businesses.

The rule would have required a B2 mandate starting this year, rising to 5 percent by 2013.
