New fees at International Bridge

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (Jan. 6, 2004) — The Joint International Bridge Authority in Sault Ste. Marie has announced that as of January 1, a fee of $100 will be applied to all vehicles transporting explosives (class 1), poison gases (class 2.3), flammable solids (class 4.1), and radioactive material (class 7).

The bridge authority will also apply an escort fee to those vehicles over 12 feet wide, or in excess of 144,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. The new fees will be charged in addition to the regular toll charge.

Drivers must contact the IBA for an escort when they arrive at the bridge plaza. They will be escorted across the bridge at speeds below 25 km/h. The IBA says the plan also ensures that oversized and overwidth loads do not meet while crossing the two-lane span.
