New installation guidelines for headache racks from B.C. WCB
PORT COQUITLAM B.C. (June 23, 1999) — The B.C. Workers’ Compensation Board has issued a notice regarding the U-bolts used to secure bulkheads, or headache racks, to commercial vehicle frames. The British Columbia Trucking Association has reported that a recent fatal accident attributed to U-bolt failure has prompted the B.C. WCB to draft new mounting guidelines.
The failed U-bolts were one-inch diameter, grade 5, and had been manufactured with a 1/2-inch inside bend radius at the two corners that create the “U” shape. WCB’s investigation revealed that the one-inch bolts should have had an interior bend radius of 3/4 of an inch.
The report also recommends an examination of all existing installations to insure that the top of the u-bolt makes full contact with the frame. To further strengthen the U-bolt connection, WCB said it is essential that a stiffener be installed at the bolt locations to prevent bending of the vehicle frame. But care must be taken not to cut, drill or weld the frame while installing the stiffener without first consulting the vehicle manufacturer.
A better solution would be to replace the existing U-bolts with straight bolts and tie-plates along with a frame stiffener. Regardless of the type of installation, the nuts must be tightened evenly to the torque limits specified by the bulkhead manufacturer.
