New Penn to pick up A-P-A business

NORTH BERGIN, N.J. (Feb. 25, 2002) — New Penn Motor Express, the Lebanon, Pa.-based regional less-than-truckload division of Roadway Corp., said it acquired “certain customer information” and was handling final deliveries for A-P-A Transport Corp., the North Bergen, N.J., less-than-truckload firm that ceased operations last week.

“The decision of A-P-A to discontinue operations certainly came as a shock to our industry and especially to the customers of A-P-A,” New Penn President Stephen M. O’Kane said in a statement. “This opportunity was presented at a time when we have sufficient capacity to assimilate a significant portion of the A-P-A business while maintaining New Penn’s reputation as a premier service provider.”

A-P-A’s collapse follows in a series of major bankruptcies in the U.S. Northeast trucking market in recent years, including Preston Trucking and St. Johnsbury Trucking. Only three major carriers continue to serve the region: New Penn, New England Motor Freight, and USF Red Star.
