NJ cracks down harder on truck idlers
TRENTON, N.J. — APUs or bust. That’s pretty much the choice these days for truckers wanting to cool off or warm up in New Jersey.
The state stepped up its anti-idling laws. The new amendments, which cancel most of the previous idling exemptions for truckers, went into effect earlier this month.
Diesel trucks no longer are allowed to idle for more than three minutes. They also cannot idle for half an hour at their business headquarters at the beginning of the day, nor for 15 minutes following a three-hour engine shutdown.
By 2010, truckers will be prohibited from idling their vehicles overnight.
