NMFA negotiations to resume this week; Teamsters say strike authorization a certainty

WASHINGTON (Feb. 3, 2003) — With its members on the verge of a strike authorization vote, the Teamsters Union said it would reopen negotiations with major trucking firms this week in Chicago.

The negotiations on a new National Master Freight Agreement, which began last fall, broke down Jan. 20 in a dispute over wages and health care benefits. The contract, which covers 65,000 Teamster truck drivers, expires March 31.

The group bargaining for the trucking companies is the Motor Freight Carriers Association. Among the companies represented are Yellow Corp., Roadway Corp., and Arkansas Best.

The union is expected to announce the results of a strike authorization vote today. Members who have voted so far “are overwhelmingly authorizing a strike should contract negotiations continue to stall,” the union said.
