There’s gold to be made in hauling dirt and trash–not to mention hog fuel, saw dust, and other loose material. Quick turnarounds are key. But in the winter, moisture and ice can cause your loads to cling to the inside of the trailer or dump box. This is more than an inconvenience. It’s a hazard, considering the weight imbalance a glob of frozen muck can cause.

Canuck Chemicals in Oakville, Ont., says it has the answer in CanCoat, a non-stick coating for cargo beds, garbage packers, and containers. You can leave the waste material indefinitely in sub-zero temperatures, the company says, and it will still release cleanly. CanCoat contains no silicone, won’t harm paint, and is non-toxic (it won’t harm your skin). It can also be used to inhibit snow and ice build-up on truck or trailer undercarriages, preventing overweight fines at the scale, or as a snowplow and snowblower wax, preventing snow buildup on plow blades.

As well, it’s claimed that equipment treated with CanCoat can be placed into long-term storage without the risk of rust or corrosion.

With indefinite shelf life, CanCoat comes in 55-gallon drums. Expect 10 to 15 loads per application, depending on the abrasiveness of materials hauled, meaning the end cost per load will be $2.50 to $3.50, the company says. The first treatment should go on a clean, dry trailer, spayed, brushed, or wiped on. For the initial treatment, one gallon covers approximately 500 square feet. Additional treatments require approximately half that amount, and you re-apply as necessary when mechanical abrasion finally removes coating.

To prevent snow and ice build-up on undercarriages, it’s suggested that you spray once every four to six weeks. An added bonus: once the undercarriage
