No truck route included in bridge plans

OTTAWA — Locals are angered that a new proposed bridge in Ottawa won’t bring in any truck traffic relief to the nation’s capital.

Even after the Kettle Island Bridge is built, additional traffic will still funnel close to the downtown core, via King Edward Ave., according to a report by Sun Media.

Residents told the Sun that they are concerned that the proposed new bridge across the Ottawa River between Ottawa doesn’t include additional access off the Aviation Parkway to the westbound 417.

City planners insist that after the new bridge goes up in 2031, roughly the same amount of trucks per day — about 2,500 — will be accessing the current commercial route Macdonald-Cartier bridge and King Edward Ave.

Meanwhile, the new Kettle Island Bridge will handle the 1,700 additional trucks expected over the next 20 years.
