Nova Scotia details spring weight restrictions

HALIFAX (Feb. 24) — Nova Scotia released its list of highways that are exempt from spring weight restrictions, which begin March 1 — nearly two weeks earlier than normal due to unseasonably warm weather.

The list details nearly 400 public roads or portions of roads that are exempt from the restrictions. It is available from district and area offices of the Dept. of Transportation and Public Works, and at provincial weigh scales.

The restrictions for roads not on the exempt list fall into three categories and begin on March 1 at 12:01 a.m. For Yarmouth, Shelburne, Digby, and Queens counties, the restrictions end at 12:01 a.m on April 19. For the counties of Annapolis, Kings, Lunenburg, Halifax, and Hants, the restrictions end at 12:01 a.m. April 22. For Colchester, Cumberland, Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough, Richmond, Inverness, Victoria, and Cape Breton counties, the restrictions end at 12:01 a.m. April 26.

During the restriction period, the maximum single-axle weight is 6500 kilograms, except passenger and school buses; maximum tandem- or triple-axle weight is 12,000 kg; the maximum gross vehicle weight is 12,000 kg for public utility service trucks with permanently mounted equipment; and the maximum gross vehicle weight is 12,000 kg for school and passenger buses.

There will be no tolerances, the Ministry said.
