Nova Scotia sues trucker for collapsed bridge; province says load was too heavy for span

HALIFAX (May 6, 2002) — The Nova Scotia government is suing a truck driver and his employer over a collapsed bridge in Cape Breton, claiming the vehicle was too heavy for the span.

The accident happened June 6, 2000, when Allan Francis Hayne, employed by J.C. MacIntosh Trucking of St. Andrews, N.S., drove his tractor-trailer across Long John Bridge near Upper Southwest Mabou, N.S.

The suit alleged that Hayne’s vehicle weighed 51,000 kilograms. The maximum allowed on the bridge is 38,000 kilograms. The province wants more than $227,000 to tear down and replace the bridge, as well as general damages and court costs.

The suit was filed at Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
