NS makes road reports available via cell phone

HALIFAX — This winter has not been kind to Maritime drivers. Now, Nova Scotians at least, can get instant weather information on their BlackBerrys, smartphones and other hand-held wireless devices, courtesy of the provincial government.

This week, the Ministry of Transportation launched 511 Mobile, a text-only version of the department’s road conditions website. The mobile version eliminates the graphics on the original site, making information on road conditions, traffic and emergency situations faster to download onto your wireless device.

"We always encourage drivers to check road conditions before heading out, and this new feature puts the information in the palm of their hands," said minister Brooke Taylor.

To access 511 Mobile on your smartphone go to m511.gov.ns.ca.

Just make sure you check the info on the phone before getting behind the wheel of you car. Nova Scotia is one of a handful of provinces that bans talking and texting while driving.
