Ohio Turnpike raises speed limit

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Turnpike announced a 5 mph speed limit increase to 70 mph on April 1 for both cars and commercial trucks.

The Buckeye state toll highway now matches about 25 other jurisdictions with highway speed limits of 70 mph (about 113 km/h) or higher.

The Ohio Department of Transportation, as well as the Ohio Trucking Association, opposed to the speed increase.

According to local media, the trucking group wanted a toll discount to attract truckers to the 240-mile road. A speed hike would be unattractive for carriers that limit their speed to save fuel.

The Ohio Turnpike Commission, instead, is hoping more truckers will use the turnpike to avoid more congested, two-lane county roads.

Commercial trucks make up about 20 percent of the Turnpike’s traffic volume.
