Ontario considers passing-lane ban for trucks
TORONTO (June 11, 2001) — An Ontario private member’s bill that would ban commercial trucks from the passing lane on the 400 series highways and the QEW has been sent to a legislative committee for debate.
“There is no reason for Class A (transport) trucks to be changing lanes, unless the right lane is obstructed for whatever reason,” said Conservative MPP Frank Mazzilli (London-Fanshawe), whose bill was sent to the justice committee after getting second reading last week.
The bill, supported by the Canadian Automobile Association and the Ontario Provincial Police, would bar trucks weighing 4600 kilograms and over from the passing lane on multi-lane highways.
