Ontario driver named Canada’s Driver of the Year

TORONTO (Nov. 13, 2000) — Barry Enman, a driver with Warren Gibson Ltd. in Alliston, Ont., has been named Canada’s 2000 CTA/Volvo Trucks Canada National Driver of the Year.

The award has been presented annually for the past 25 years to a Canadian truck driver who holds an exemplary driving record and demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and courage both on and off the road.

Enman, a 26-year industry veteran, has accumulated over 6.4 million collision-free kilometres. He was also recognized for bravery at the site of an accident on Hwy. 401 in 1994 just outside of London. Enman and two other men positioned their trucks to prevent further injuries and cut the driver of one of the cars involved in the collision out of her vehicle as she was hanging from the driver’s seat.

“Barry Enman’s outstanding driving record, and his selfless actions at roadside exemplify the commitment to road safety made by Canada’s professional truck drivers,” says David Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance. “But it is in the way he goes about his day-to-day work — both on and off the road — that makes him stand out above the rest.”

Enman, of Stayner, Ont., receives a $1000 cash prize and a trip for two anywhere in Canada, courtesy of Volvo Trucks Canada. He was presented with the award last week at the 2000 Ontario Trucking Association convention in Toronto.
