Ontario driving test centers closed
TORONTO — More than 550 Ontario driving examiners walked off the job this morning after last-ditch talks broke down between Steelworkers local 9511 and their employer, Serco DES Inc, which operates the 55 full-time DriveTest locations and 38 part-time facilities across the province.
No road or written tests will take place until the strike is over.
Regular renewals for drivers who do not require testing will continue to be available at Ontario Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Offices.
However, aspiring new drivers and those over 80 retesting on the road (commercial truck drivers have to retest at 65 years of age) will be out of luck. Though, their licenses will be automatically extended until the labor dispute is resolved.
The two sides are apparently still far apart on the issue of job security.
Early this morning, union president Jim Young told media that the union told Serco DES to accept its latest offer or face strike action.
