Ontario government approves Hwy. 407 extension

TORONTO (May 11, 2001) — The Ontario government has given the green light to an extension of Hwy. 407 eastward through the cities of Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa under a plan announced in the provincial budget yesterday.

The extension would end in Clarington, at the intersection of highways 35 and 115.

Hwy. 407 is a toll road operated by Quebec consortium SNC Lavalin. It bypasses the heart of urban Toronto to the north, serving as an alternative to Hwy. 401.

Further development of Hwy. 407 is opposed by environmentalists because of the expected cost and commercial development at the expense of farmland. An extension under construction through Markham will be open to Brock Road in Pickering early next year.
