Ontario Government to expand province’s highways

Expanding on Ontario Premier Mike Harris’ announcement last week to broaden the province’s highway network, the Ministry of Transportation announced it will include two new major highways and three expansions to existing roads.

New Transportation Minister Brad Clark hinted at the possibility of building a second span over the Detroit River in Windsor. He also said some of the new highways may be tolled.

The rest of the plans include building another highway north of Hwy 7, which will run east-west highway across the city. Another possibility is to extend the 407 east, from Brock Rd. in Pickering to highways 35/115l. Hwy 404 may also be extended to link with Hwy 400 and a bypass may be added to reach Bradford. The Niagara region may also get a second highway which would link into Hwy 403 near Burlington.
