Ontario highway spending topped $1 billion in 2000

TORONTO (Dec. 27, 2000) — The Ontario government said it spent $1-billion on highway construction in 2000, the first year of its five-year, $20-billion SuperBuild infrastructure initiative.

Projects completed during the 2000 construction season include more than 110 new lane-kilometres to the provincial highway network; improvements to approximately 2300 lane-kilometres of pavement; 22 new bridges; and rehabilitation work on 89 existing bridges and overpasses.

Transportation Minister David Turnbull made the announcement at the official opening for a Hwy. 400 expansion project, in Toronto. Hwy. 400 has been widened to six lanes in each direction, between Hwy. 401 and Steeles Ave. This project will increase the capacity of the highway by approximately 6000 vehicles an hour.
