Ontario takes steps toward environmental assessment of proposed Niagara highway

QUEEN’S PARK, Ont. (June 14, 2002) — The Ontario government has hired a consulting firm to lay groundwork for an environmental assessment of a new mid-peninsula transportation corridor in the Niagara, Hamilton, and Halton areas.

URS Cole Sherman, of Markham, Ont., will outline the scope of a study to examine the potential impact the highway would have on the environment. Public hearings are planned this summer.

If approved, a new mid-peninsula transportation corridor would provide an alternate route to the Queen Elizabeth Way through the Niagara Peninsula and Hamilton. The corridor would then pass around Hamilton, connecting with the Greater Toronto Area transportation network.
