Ontario’s “Drive Clean” Transition Period Wraps Up
TORONTO (Jan. 13, 2000) – Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment has confirmed that January 15th remains the final deadline for implementation of the province’s “Drive Clean” emissions-inspection program for heavy commercial vehicles. As of this date, all vehicle owners will be required to produce an original, valid Drive Clean inspection “pass” certificate in order to renew licence-plate stickers.
There had been a temporary policy is effect that allowed truck owners 90 days after registration to achieve the Drive Clean certificate, due to an initial lack of sufficient numbers of inspection stations. Now this grace period has been terminated, and any operator of an Ontario-registered truck may be required to show the original or a certified copy of its Drive Clean “pass” certificate whenever requested by a provincial enforcement officer. Subsequent Drive Clean inspections are required every 12 months, regardless of vehicle-registration renewal date.
