Operation Air Brake scheduled
OTTAWA (Aug. 15, 2002) — Commercial vehicle enforcement agencies throughout North America will conduct 12 hours of brake safety roadside inspections Sept. 5 as part of Operation Air Brake-a brake safety campaign sponsored by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and Transport Canada.
Although brake-related defects continue to be the most frequent commercial vehicle equipment violations, the results from Operation Air Brake show improvements in safety compliance, according to CVSA. Since 1998, the out-of-service rate for brakes has dropped by 22 per cent in Canada, where the program originated from. Since 1999, when the U.S. became involved, the out-of-service rate for that country has dropped by seven per cent.
