OPP cracks down on unsafe truckers
TORONTO — The Ontario Provincial Police has informed the Ontario Trucking Association it will begin targeting truckers that are driving too fast for conditions, “especially in inclement weather.”
“Although commercial motor vehicles are not always responsible for the initial collision, the chances for serious injuries, fatalities and long road closures increase when tractor-trailers become involved,” said Larry Beechey, acting deputy commissioner of Traffic Safety.
“It is recognized that the majority of professional commercial drivers abide by the law. However, for those that do not, there must a degree of accountability.”
The month-long crackdown will focus on speed, tailgating and failing to move into the far lane when passing a parked emergency vehicle.
The OPP has made it clear to the OTA “that there will be little tolerance for violators.”
