Orbital buys Raytheon’s transportation management solutions business unit

DULLES, Va. (Jan. 11) — Orbital Sciences Corp. said it has completed its acquisition of Raytheon Co.’s Transportation Management Solutions business unit for a cash price of approximately $21 million US. Orbital plans to combine the division with its own Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) group to form a new division called Transportation Management Systems (TMS).

Orbital’s TMS division will supply automatic vehicle location systems that use satellite and terrestrial communications and positioning technologies to operators of highway maintenance trucks and mass transit vehicles. Orbital will also gain a new product line of fleet management software for utilities and other companies.

The Raytheon division employed approximately 75 people at facilities in Linthicum, Md., and State College, Pa. All have been offered jobs with Orbital, the company said.

Raytheon, based in Lexington, Mass., specializes in products and services for the aeronautics industry. Orbital manufactures low-cost space systems, including a constellation of low earth orbit satellites used for vehicle tracking through its ORBCOMM affiliate.
