Ottawa spends $17 million on high-tech X-ray equipment for customs inspections

OTTAWA (April 4, 2002) — The purchase of new X-ray equipment signal Canada’s commitment to a “high tech, secure and effective border,” Revenue Minister Elinor Caplan said last week.

The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) has ordered 10 high-energy x-ray machines valued at approximately $17 million, including truck-mounted mobile X-ray systems and stationary cargo/pallet x-ray systems for use at marine, air, and highway ports across Canada.

Since October 2001, the CCRA has doubled its national inventory of X-ray systems, ion mobility spectrometers, and other types of contraband detection technology. This equipment is currently being delivered to customs ports throughout Canada.

In the coming months, the CCRA is expected to make a series of announcements regarding new technology and new programs to be implemented at Canadian points of entry.
