Paccar cuts Kenworth, Pete plant jobs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Truckmaker Paccar Inc. is slashing shifts at its Peterbilt Motors Co. plant outside Nashville and its Kenworth Truck plant in Renton, Wash.
According to Associate Press, both plants will be left with one daily shift because of the impending downturn in truck demand after new, more expensive low emission 2007 engines hit dealerships in the early part of next year.
Many truck buyers pre-bought equipment in 2006 or will likely chose to sit on existing equipment for a year rather than equip their fleets with the new engines, which are about $7,000 to $12,000 more.
Paccar spokesman Andy Wold didn’t give specific staffing and layoff numbers for either plant, but The Tennessean newspaper reported that 667 of 1,200 workers in Madison, Tenn., have been sent layoff notices.
