Palladini, former Ontario transport minister, dies at 57

TORONTO (March 12, 2001) — Al Palladini, the former Ontario transport minister who helped lead a comprehensive review of the province’s truck safety rules, died March 7 of a heart attack while vacationing in Mexico.

Palladini, 57, was appointed transportation minister in 1995 after winning his first bid for public office. His tenure included some of the most challenging times for the trucking industry, including two fatal accidents that occurred when heavy trucks lost wheels while traveling on the highway. The mishaps focused unyielding attention on truck safety and maintenance.

Palladini worked with the Ontario Trucking Association and other industry groups on Target 97, a task force on truck safety, and a training and certification program for installers of heavy-duty wheels.
