Paul’s Hauling sells off Gardewine division

WINNIPEG — One of Canada’s largest private for-hire carriers continues to trim down.

Paul’s Hauling Group of companies has sold the Gardewine Group to Calgary-based private- equity firm TriWest Capital Partners, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.

Financial details of the sale were disclosed.

The deal comes just a little more than a year after owner Paul Albrechtsen sold liquid bulk hauler Westcan Bulk of Edmonton to the same firm.

TriWest subsequently merged Westcan with ice hauler RTL Robinson to create one of the largest niche commodity carriers in Western Canada.

According to the report, the operations of Winnipeg-based Gardewine — mainly a general goods LTL hauler with a strong presence in Manitoba, Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan — will not be affected by the sale.

Gardewine’s senior management team has retained a significant ownership stake in the Gardewine Group.

Paul’s Hauling has been routinely ranked as one of the top 10 largest for-hire carriers in Canada by Today’s Trucking. In 2008, though, it dropped to 19, from the ninth largest the year before, with 2,200 power units and trailers.
