Peace Bridge construction looms
Those of you who use the Peace Bridge border crossing between Fort Erie, Ont., and Buffalo, NY, have three years of construction to look forward to. A so-called ‘companion span’ will be built alongside the present bridge, with work expected to start this Spring and continue until 2002. Oh, joy.
The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority says the $89-million cost will be self-funded through the issuance of revenue bonds. It will also include re-decking of the existing bridge. It’s all part of the Authority’s plan to increase traffic capacity by 100% while making it an efficient and competitive gateway option.
Other elements of the ambitious capital plan include new connecting roadways, modernization of the U.S. Plaza, implementation of pre-arrival processing systems for commercial traffic, and electronic tolls for passenger cars.
The original three-lane bridge was built in 1927.
