PeopleNet to expand wireless offerings

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 22, 2001) — PeopleNet Communications, a supplier of fleet management and communications products, is beta testing a wireless vehicle diagnostics product designed to help fleet managers track and manage operating costs without the use of an onboard computer.

Called PerformX, the system uses a system of alarms and reports to help managers see vehicle performance data at regular intervals. It communicates with the J1708 bus and uses wireless technology based on the company’s INTOUCH Fleet Management systems to send data “on the fly.”

Performance reports are sent directly to a manager’s e-mail while the vehicle is on the road. These reports provide odometer readings, idle time, fuel efficiency, excess speed, high RPM readings, among other performance measures. They can alert managers when a vehicle travels over a predetermined speed, makes sudden starts or stops, or reaches a certain odometer reading.

The company said PerformX is scheduled for release at the end of first quarter 2001. It will be offered as an option to PeopleNet’s INTOUCH Fleet Management systems.
