Petes breaking out all over
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Peterbilt is taking its showpiece on the road.
The sun was shining and the hamburgers sizzling as customers and interested parties dropped in at Peterbilt Ontario Truck Centre Mississauga Wednesday to get up close and personal with a bright red EPA-Smartway certified 587.
And a look at where truck technology in general is headed.
The new rig was introduced at the Mid America Trucking show in March and will start rolling off the assembly line in January.
Pete’s sending it on a tour of North America and after the Mississauga date, it will drop in on Cardinal, Ont., Montreal, and then points east.
shows some of the finer design points of the
587 to PacLease’s Leo Ragusa and Michelle Sedlezky.
In addition to the truck, which is powered by Paccar’s proprietary MX engine, the traveling road show includes a walkthrough Paccar hi-tech trailer which is a virtual rolling museum of the latest in gadgetry, telematics and engine features.
“It is,” Dave Farington, general manager says, “a look into the future of trucking.”
Finally, right between the truck and the trailer/museum, sits a huge tank of Clean Blue, the urea-based diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) additive that all 2010-and-beyond engines (except for those produced by Navistar) will use to meet EPA 2010 GHG and NOX emission standards.
Farington says the 587 with the MX engine as displayed will be best suited to linehaul and urban applications.
That will be expanded as more trucks come on line, he adds.
The truck is also available with the Cummins ISX15. Fuller Manual and Automatic transmissions are available with axle ratings up to 46,000 lbs.
