Premier: Deal to kill New Brunswick tolls to come ‘within a few days’
FREDERICTON (Feb. 10, 2000) — New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord told the legislature yesterday that a deal to remove the tolls from a four-lane highway between Fredericton and Moncton will be announced as early as next week.
“I can’t say today that we have a final agreement, but I can say today that within a few days, I will be in a position to make an announcement,” he said.
In December, Lord said the province and the road’s private operator, Maritime Road Development Corp., had reached a deal in principle to remove the tolls.
Last year, Lord’s campaign for the premiership included a promise to remove the tolls within 200 days of taking office. The self-imposed deadline expired last month.
