Province ponders ‘speed-on-green’ cameras for cities
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Alberta drivers in municipalities may have to keep an extra eye out for red light cameras as they approach intersections in smaller towns.
Alberta, which already has province-wide photo radar and red light cameras in major urban centres, is considering installing cameras at other city intersections, which marry photo radar with red light cameras.
Martin Dupuis, spokesman for Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation, told the Lethbridge Herald said the idea is just a proposal at this stage.
The province will undergo a consultation period, which includes online surveys and discussion papers.
If government allows for the use of “speed-on-green technology,” it will be up to municipalities to determine whether or not they will use it — as is the case currently with photo radar, Dupuis points out.
One hurdle in the way of implementation, is the cost. Each camera is worth about $35,000, the Herald reports.
