QEW detour route plans back on

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Ontario is one step closer to constructing an emergency detour route through St. Catharines.

According to local media, the plan has been in the works since 2003 and in June Niagara Region and Ontario Ministry of Transportation officials will meet to discuss implementation.

Cars and trucks would have a new bypass artery in the event QEW or Highway 406 close down for construction or in an emergency.

The emergency route would also keep transport trucks off residential roads that aren’t designed for heavy loads.

Transport Minister Jim Bradley, an MPP for St. Catharines, told media that the project has become a priority.
