Quebec carriers need 2400 new drivers, survey says
MONTREAL (Sept. 8,1999) — Trucking companies in Quebec need nearly 2400 new drivers — desperately, according to a survey conducted by the Quebec Trucking Association.
The results, published in the Montreal Gazette last week, show openings for 2380 truck drivers at 237 Montreal-area companies. The situation illustrates the need for the provincial government to open new driver training schools, the QTA said. Two existing schools are capable of producing only 500 new truck drivers a year. The alternative is to recruit new drivers from private truck driving schools, some of which, the association said, have poor reputations.
The survey suggests that part of the problem is due to deregulation, which has caused driver wages to fall back to 1987 levels.
