Quebec MP named transport minister

OTTAWA, Ont. — Canada has a new federal transportation minister. Lawrence Cannon, an MP from Pontiac, Que. was given the Transport, Infrastructure and Communities portfolio when new PM Stephen Harper named his first Conservative Party cabinet yesterday.

The 58-year-old politician was first elected to the Quebec legislature for La Peltrie, 1985; served as deputy house leader; deputy speaker; minister of communications. He was elected municipal counsellor for City of Gatineau in 2001; served as chairman of urban transit authority; and vice-chairman of Quebec Association of Urban Transit.

Cannon is seen to be a Liberal, but ran for the Conservatives to counter the rise of sovereigntist support in Quebec. He is also said to be urban-centered and friendly towards urban transit initiatives.
