Report: DaimlerChrysler has plan to buy Nissan Diesel

TOYKO (Feb. 24, 2000) — Freightliner Corp. and Mercedes Benz parent DaimlerChrysler AG will announce a plan to buy Nissan Diesel, Nissan Motor Co.’s indebted truck affiliate, according to German news reports.

Nissan Diesel Motor Co. shares jumped 20% in Tokyo following the news report by Germany’s VWD news agency. It said DaimlerChrysler, seeking a stronger presence in Asia, had prepared contracts for the agreements. DaimlerChrysler officials are calling the report speculation.

Earlier this month Nissan Motor, of which Mack Trucks parent Renault SA is a major investor, said it was working with banks in Japan to renegotiate the truckmakerÕs substantial bank debt.
