Rise in Class 8 Orders Reflect ‘Genuine Need for Trucks’

COLUMBUS, IN — For the eighth month in a row, May’s class 8 orders stayed above 20,000 units. May’s orders also rose to their second highest volume in 17 months, ACT Research reported today. Year-over-year, that’s a sizable 29 percent increase.

“New orders being placed for Class 8 vehicles continue to come from soon-to-be buyers who are genuine in their need for new trucks,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s VP-Commercial Vehicle Sector.

What’s more is that cancellations have decreased, Tam said, “flirting with a new all time low. The lack of speculative orders bodes well for the industry as any increase in need for trucks will translate immediately into order activity,” he added.

New class 8 orders for May stayed flat at 24,218 units and net orders were at 23,188. Classes 5-7 net orders added up to 17,088 units — the best order volume in eight months, ACT noted.
